I am not really good at picking shorts, or betting on the market going down. As you've seen from my SDS prediction which has so far been completely wrong.
But I do know that if you are looking for an easy target, you need look no further than Canadian smartphone maker Research in Motion. Blackberry as a brand is just about dead. Someone take it out back and put it out of its misery.
There has been speculation lately of a possible buy-out after GOOG moved to acquire MMI for $12.5 billion. I think that while Google clearly overpaid for Motorola, there is more that makes sense about that deal than anyone buying RIMM.
The market cap as of this writing is $14 B. I am predicting that will slip to around $10 B with a share price of $19. Motorola got bought for $12B, but before the buyout they were worth about $8B. (Huge premium paid by Google for some reason.) It is quite likely someone will acquire RIMM, but why not let it get a lot cheaper first?
Oh and their entry into the tablet market made a loud sucking sound. Is anyone out there saying, hmm, should I get an iPad or a Playbook? DING DING the answer is NO, NO ONE WOULD EVER SAY THAT. Have any of your facebook friends posted about how they finally got a smartphone and it's a blackberry? There is just no buzz to their products.
